Today ( 21/06/2025),  I visited one of the banks to process an application. I was served by an officer—likely a recent recruit, perhaps fresh out of school—who, during the process, occasionally sought guidance from his senior colleagues and supervisor. Watching him carefully navigate the steps, I sat patiently, responding to his questions and providing the necessary information.

While seated on the long chair at the counter, I opened the book I had brought with me. Fortunately, I had left my phone at home, which allowed me to fully embrace the quiet moment and enjoy reading, something I only occasionally do while waiting.

As I observed him working—now assisted by three of his colleagues—I began to reflect on my own experience. I, too, had once been new, uncertain, and eager to learn. I remembered how someone had taken a chance on me, guided me, and gave me the space to ask questions and learn through trial and error. For example, how to operate a printer, scanning, copying, and other minute tasks that I now consider rudimentary and mundane.

That early support became the foundation of my growth and laid the foundation for who I’ve become. Without it, I wouldn’t be where I am. Watching this young officer reminded me of that journey. It reaffirmed a quiet truth: we all start somewhere. And when we’re met with patience and support, we learn, we adapt, and we grow.

As I left the bank—satisfied that my purpose had been fulfilled—I also walked away with something more: a renewed commitment to offer others the same support that was once extended to me. As I arrived home, I pondered on one of the lyrics of my favourite song by Tim McGraw, Humble and Kind:

Don’t take for granted the love this life gives you

When you get where you’re goin’, don’t forget turn back around

And help the next one in line

Always stay humble and kind

Always lend a helping hand where needed.
